Yesterday, the Lakers signed Vander Blue to what was known as a “partially-guaranteed” deal. I noticed a lot of fans on Twitter were excited that he signed with the team. I am too, but he’s far from a lock to make the roster. Blue is now the 15th player under contract for the Lakers, but is the only partially-guaranteed figure.
The deal is guaranteed for just $50,000. In other words, he’s a training camp invite. If Blue makes the team and performs well this year, the Lakers can match any free agent offer that he receives next year via restricted free agency.
If anything, this deal gives Blue the chance to compete. As the reigning MVP of the G League, Blue still has a lot to prove. Can he improve his shooting efficiency? During Summer League, he shot a slash line of 40/50/71 (FG/3P/FT), which would qualify as efficient.
Blue finished the tournament with 15 ppg, as well as 3 rpg and apg. To say that he earned his camp invite would be an understatement. Following the signing of his contract, Blue posted a rigorous workout video from the pool. The underdog is putting in some serious work, and we’ll find out if that pays off for him come September
